The Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr Jide Idris has reteirated the need to train environmental officers to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and standards to curtail cholera outbreak in the country.
He made the disclosure while speaking on Channels Television.
According to him, cholera disease can be prevented by following basic hygiene practices.
“Prevention mechanism is very weak, we seem to have forgotten the need for prevention, or we are not taking it very seriously. In a situation where resources are limited, that’s the best approach we can take”, he said.
The DG disclosed that the easiest way for maintaining good personal hygiene is handwashing.
“The problem of poor sanitation and lack of access to water should be addressed.
Handwashing should be practised before and after eating”, he said.
He further charged the state government to ensure that the citizen have access to clean water and toilet.
“In a situation where you tell people to do hand-washing and there is no access to water, there is a huge problem.
The Federal state amd local governments,
should ensure that everyone has access to good portable water”, he said.
