The Bauchi state government has announced that the recent flooding has rendered 122,330 households homeless, destroying 52,035 houses.
The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajara Wanka disclosed this while briefing journalists after an extraordinary state executive council meeting.
According to Wanka, the recent disaster has resulted in losses of over ₦22bn.
She said 163 people have been severely injured, 24 deaths, and severely impacted 16 local government areas within the state.
Wanka reported that a high-powered committee has been set up by the governor to assess the extent of the damage, and the situation is being continuously monitored as the rainfall continues.
The flooding has had a devastating impact, with 12 major roads cut off, mainly in the northern parts of the state 60 culverts washed away, 52,035 houses destroyed, 178 electric poles collapsed and 11,183 livestock lost.
Wanka said: “We are collaborating with the ministries of health and education to evaluate the damage to schools and other health facilities.”
She described the situation as overwhelming and highlighted the state’s efforts to provide relief materials, including cash, food, and non-food items.
She said, “The state is working with the federal government to assess the damage and find lasting solutions.” The governor has also approved additional funding for the renovation of culverts and for the procurement of essential supplies.”
