In a bid to tackle plastic pollution and open defecation, the International Climate Change Development Initiative (ICCDI) in collaboration with support of Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) has launched a project to construct toilets using plastic bottles across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.
The ICCDI’s Executive Director Olumide Idowu, made the disclosure.
He said: “ICCDI with the support of Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) is proud to announce the launch of a project focused on reducing plastic waste through innovative bottle toilets.”
The project is said to be designed to engage and empower women and youth across six states, providing them with training on constructing and maintaining bottle toilets using recycled materials. This initiative promotes sustainability, fosters a sense of ownership, and enhances community sanitation infrastructure.
Idowu emphasized, “By repurposing plastic bottles into functional toilets, we aim to significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste in the environment.”
He also noted that the project will help combat open defecation, leading to improved sanitary conditions, particularly for women and girls.
The ICCDI plans to commission the projects in all six locations on November 19, 2025, coinciding with World Toilet Day.
This initiative builds upon their previous success in commissioning a six-unit toilet for a primary school in Lagos.
By addressing plastic pollution and open defecation, ICCDI’s innovative project is a significant step towards creating a more sustainable and healthy environment in Nigeria.
