The Founder and CEO of Lister Hospital and Fertility Centre in Accra, Ghana, Dr Edem Hiadzi has highlighted the growing concern of infertility, affecting both men and women equally.
According to Dr. Hiadzi, about half of the causes of infertility are due to or include male factors, dispelling the common myth that infertility is solely a women’s issue.
He stated this at the Merck Foundation Media Training in Dubia.
Dr. Hiadzi noted that infertility affects the reproductive age group between 20 and 45 years, with varying prevalence rates across different regions.
” In sub-Saharan Africa, the prevalence rate is estimated to be between 20-30%, while in the UK and USA, it stands at 6% and 10%, respectively.”
He further added that the causes of infertility can be attributed to various factors, and urgently should be addressed.
Dr. Hiadzi emphasizes the need for awareness and understanding of infertility, which affects both men and women equally.
“With the prevalence rates varying across regions, it is essential to address the causes and seek medical attention if difficulties arise.”
“We are committed to providing solution and support to individuals and couples struggling with infertility. With the right diagnosis and treatment, many couples can overcome infertility and achieve their dream of starting a family.”
Speaking at the event, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist from Rwanda, Dr. Mwesigye, a Merck Foundation Alumni, emphasized that infertility is a major concern that requires a comprehensive approach to diagnose and treat.
In the same vein, he noted that the causes of infertility are multifaceted and include infections such as STIs, abortions, and childbirths, which can lead to blocked tubes in women.
“Poor quality sperm, including low sperm count and azoospermia, is also a significant factor. In women, fibroids and other pathologies can also contribute to infertility.
Dr. Mwesigye highlighted the various treatment options available, including antibiotics to treat infections.
“Antioxidants and hormones to improve sperm quality, and medically assisted reproduction.
He also called for perfect equality between men and women and better management of infertility problems.
