A devastating maritime disaster occurred off the Greek island of Lesbos on Thursday, resulting in the loss of seven lives, including two children, after an inflatable boat carrying migrants capsized in the Aegean Sea. The Greek coast guard managed to rescue 23 survivors, but the search for additional survivors continues .
The boat, which was carrying approximately 30 people, encountered mild weather conditions before it took on water and started to sink. Among the deceased were four women, a boy, and a girl. The nationalities of the three remaining victims have not been disclosed.
In response to the ongoing migrant crisis, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the government’s commitment to enforcing strict border controls, stating, “If you want to enter Greece illegally and are not entitled to asylum, we will do whatever we can to send you back where you came from.”
Greece’s strategic location in the eastern Mediterranean makes its islands a common route for undocumented migrants from Asia and the Middle East seeking to reach Western Europe .
