The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two women Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, for attempting to sell newborn twin girls.
The e Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin, made the disclosure.
The suspects were apprehended at Berger bus stop by officers from the Ojodu Division, thanks to a tip-off from concerned citizens.
According Hundeyin, “The suspects were found with two newborn girls, approximately six days old, on September 9, 2024, while traveling from Abia State” The babies were meant to be delivered to a nurse in Lagos, whom the mother had promised to contact only upon their arrival.
During questioning, the suspects confessed to the crime, revealing they were paid N150,000 for transporting the infants. They claimed the mother sold the babies due to her inability to provide adequate care.The case has been transferred to the command’s gender unit, and the newborns are now in the custody of a motherless baby home for proper care and medical evaluation. The suspects were arraigned on September 19, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals involved in the case.”
This is a heartbreaking reminder of the reality of human trafficking in our society,” said Hundeyin. “We will continue to work tirelessly to protect the vulnerable and bring perpetrators to justice.”
