The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmad, has encouraged corps members to view their service year as an opportunity for personal growth, rather than focusing on relocating back to their hometowns.
Speaking at the NYSC’s temporary orientation camp in Kaduna on Friday, Ahmad emphasized the importance of adapting to new environments and embracing the culture of the communities to which they are posted.
Ahmad’s message came during an address to the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream ‘I’ corps members, who are currently undergoing their three-week orientation course.
He stressed that while many corps members may initially feel a sense of attachment to their home communities, the service year is about more than just returning to familiar surroundings.
He said, ”I am sure many of you will choose to remain here after your service. You should also take security seriously, Your security is our concern, but no one can secure you more than yourself.
“Skills acquisition is designed to make you independent, self-reliant and productive.
”The Federal government is out to ensure that youths are supported and empowered so they can stand on their own.
“Thousands of your predecessors who maximised the opportunity are now independent,”
“Life does not end in your home community, The mindset you adopt will determine your success during this year.”
In closing, Ahmad urged the corps members to respect the cultures and traditions of their host communities, reminding them that resilience, peace, and community engagement would not only help them succeed but also create lasting, positive impacts.
