The Delta State Police Command has apprehended a community leader and four other suspects in connection with the alleged sexual assault of young women during a festival in Oruamudhu community, Ozoro, in Isoko North Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, confirmed that the prime suspect, identified as Chief Omorede Sunday, who also served as the chief organiser of the event, was arrested alongside four others from the Oramudu quarters of Ozoro.
He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has directed that the suspects be immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.
According to Edafe, the police have deployed both tactical and investigative teams with clear instructions to track down and prosecute all individuals involved in the incident.
He also appealed to residents, particularly victims and eyewitnesses, to assist ongoing investigations by providing useful information, assuring that all tips would be handled with strict confidentiality and professionalism.
The police command reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice, urging members of the public to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding while investigations continue.
The development follows the circulation of multiple videos on social media showing disturbing scenes of young women allegedly being harassed by groups of men, with some clips depicting victims in distress and struggling to cover torn clothing.
The footage has sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians calling for swift action against those responsible and stronger protection for women.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Government has condemned the incident, describing the reported harassment and alleged rape during the Ozoro Festival as unacceptable.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said such acts were “barbaric” and have no place in society, stressing the government’s stance against all forms of abuse.
