Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja, effective February 10, 2026.
The announcement was made during the 80th Extraordinary Meeting of the Governing Council, chaired by Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso.
The university’s Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr Habib Yakoob, made the announcement in a statement.
“The appointment will take effect from Tuesday, February 10, 2026, for a single, non-renewable tenure of five years’.
He is currently the Vice-Chancellor of the Nigerian British University, Asa, Abia State. Fawehinmi brings a wealth of experience in academic leadership, having served as Head of the Department of Anatomy, Associate Dean, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Port Harcourt .
His appointment marks a new chapter in the university’s pursuit of academic excellence, innovation, and global relevance. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, 37 conference abstracts, and participated in numerous academic conferences worldwide.
The Council also extended the tenure of the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mathew Adamu, until February 10, 2026, to ensure a smooth transition .
