The Kwara State Police Command has vowed to prosecute three police officers found guilty of killing Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a 21-year-old ND II student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin .
According to Commissioner of Police, Mr. Victor Olaiya, the three officers – Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip – were dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, effective October 4, 2024, after being found guilty of leaving their beat, corrupt practices, and unlawful exercise of authority.
“The Kwara State Police Command wishes to provide an important update regarding the investigation into the tragic incident involving the loss of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola,” said Olaiya. “We have dismissed the three officers involved and they will be arraigned in court soonest.”
The police command extended its condolences to Ishola’s family, friends, and colleagues, saying, “We share in their grief and remain committed to providing them with support during this difficult period.”
Ishola was allegedly murdered by the police during a stop and search operation at the Fate area of Ilorin on September 4, 2024. His death sparked protests by students of the polytechnic, demanding justice for the slain student.
The Student Union Government of the Kwara State Polytechnic had demanded an open investigation into Ishola’s killing. The police have assured the public that justice has been served and urged citizens to trust in the legal process.
“We remain dedicated to maintaining law and order within Kwara State,” said the police. “The command appreciates the cooperation of all citizens and assures them that justice has been served.”
