President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on judicial officers across the country to uphold the sanctity of their profession by protecting integrity and ensuring the proper interpretation of the Constitution.
The President made the call on Monday while declaring open the 2025 All Nigerian Judges Conference at the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, on November 17, 2025, President Tinubu stressed that public perception of the judiciary should be of utmost concern, especially in sustaining the nation’s democracy.
He noted that the theme of this year’s biennial conference, “Building a Confident Judiciary,” was timely, as it reflects the prevailing sentiments among citizens regarding judicial processes.
“Confidence is the lifeblood of justice. A judgment may be grounded in law and delivered with clarity, but unless the public perceives it to be fair and untainted, its moral authority is diminished,” the President said.
He acknowledged concerns expressed by Nigerians over delays in the judicial system, issues of integrity, and challenges in accessing justice, urging stakeholders to reflect and implement reforms that will restore public trust.
President Tinubu emphasized that the strength of the judiciary lies not in infrastructure but in the values upheld by judges themselves.
“Our judges are the living custodians of justice; the calibre of their work defines the moral strength of the Republic,” he stated, adding that judicial welfare, training, and independence remain critical priorities of his administration.
Reaffirming government support, President Tinubu said his administration is committed to ensuring a judiciary that is strong, efficient, and uncompromising in integrity.
“Our courts must no longer be places where cases linger for years. They must become beacons of efficiency where disputes are resolved swiftly,” he noted.
He also commended the judiciary for its historic role as a stabilising force during moments of national uncertainty, stressing that technology and modernisation of court processes will continue to receive priority attention.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, expressed appreciation to the President for his commitment to justice reform. She emphasized the importance of integrity and resilience within the judicial system, noting that the NJI conference provides a platform for reflection, collaboration, and strengthening of institutional ethics.
“The temple of justice trembles where justice is denied. We must be a symbol of incorruptible honour,” the CJN said.
