President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerians living abroad to return and contribute to the nation’s development, assuring them that Nigeria is on a renewed path of growth and prosperity.
Speaking during an interactive session with the Nigerian community in Yokohama, Japan, on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), Tinubu emphasized the crucial role of the diaspora in nation-building.
Addressing professionals, entrepreneurs, and students at the Kahala Hotel and Resort, President Tinubu highlighted the importance of collective effort in driving Nigeria’s progress. He stated,
“Yes, for economic reasons, some people might decide to stay away; it’s a fundamental right of the individual, but for the economic growth and opportunity available in Nigeria, don’t stay away. Your contribution is very much needed. If you stay away, who will build it?”
Tinubu underscored that national development cannot be left to the government alone and requires shared responsibility between citizens at home and those abroad.
He urged Nigerians in the diaspora to serve as ambassadors, projecting a positive image of the country.
Highlighting his administration’s reforms, the President noted improvements in passport issuance, stabilization of key economic indicators, and upgrades in healthcare infrastructure aimed at reversing medical tourism.
He emphasized that these efforts are creating an environment conducive for all Nigerians to thrive.
Members of the Nigerian community in Japan expressed satisfaction with the government’s reforms and pledged their support. Emeka Ebogota, President of the Nigerian Union in Japan, thanked Tinubu for engaging directly with them and affirmed the Union’s readiness to contribute to Nigeria’s transformation.
The event was attended by senior officials, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Solid Minerals Dele Alake, Minister of Regional Development Abubakar Momoh, Minister of Science and Technology Uche Nnaji, Minister of Budget Atiku Bagudu, and Minister of State for Finance Doris Uzoka-Anite.
President Tinubu concluded by reiterating that Nigeria is on the rise and that every citizen, at home or abroad, has a role to play in building a stronger, more prosperous nation.
