U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran, saying the agreement is tied to Tehran’s commitment to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Trump disclosed the development in a post on Truth Social, stating that the ceasefire would involve a suspension of U.S. military actions against Iran for a 14-day period.
According to him, the decision followed discussions with Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, who urged restraint.
“Subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the complete, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double-sided ceasefire,” Trump said.
He added that the U.S. had already achieved its military objectives and was close to reaching a broader agreement aimed at long-term peace in the Middle East.
Trump said Washington had received a 10-point proposal from Iran, describing it as a “workable basis” for negotiations. He noted that most major areas of disagreement between both sides had been addressed, and the two-week window would allow for finalisation of a comprehensive deal.
Reports indicate that Israel has also agreed to the ceasefire, halting ongoing military operations as part of the arrangement.
The announcement came shortly before a previously issued U.S. deadline for decisive military action against Iran. Earlier, Trump had warned of severe consequences if Iran failed to meet U.S. demands.
Iran, however, described the ceasefire as a strategic victory. In a statement, the country’s Supreme National Security Council said the agreement compelled the U.S. to accept its 10-point proposal.
The council also claimed that Washington had agreed to lift both primary and secondary sanctions imposed on Iran, although there has been no immediate confirmation from U.S. officials.
It added that the proposal includes provisions for regulated passage through the Strait of Hormuz under the coordination of Iranian armed forces.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global shipping route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes, making its security a key concern for international markets.
The ceasefire is expected to provide a window for diplomatic efforts as both sides move toward a potential long-term agreement.
