The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he has not endorsed any candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State.
Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja on Wednesday, the former governor maintained that any decision on endorsement would depend on the outcome of deliberations by a political coalition involving members of the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress in the state.
“I have not endorsed anybody and I cannot do so until the joint coalition meets,” Wike said.
He explained that the alliance, which he described as a “rainbow coalition,” was a deliberate political strategy aimed at strengthening his camp ahead of future contests.
“We have loyalists in PDP and APC. We have put ourselves together… it is a political strategy because we have somebody we will fight,” he added.
Wike also dismissed any suggestion of collaboration with the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, stating that both camps are politically opposed.
“You know that we and Fubara are not working,” he said, declining to disclose details of his camp’s plans.
The minister further accused the governor of failing to honour an agreement reached with members of the Rivers State House of Assembly during a peace intervention by President Bola Tinubu.
According to Wike, the agreement led to the withdrawal of impeachment proceedings against Fubara, but alleged that the governor later reneged on the terms.
“The president intervened and the governor said he was ready for peace,” Wike said. “The Assembly withdrew the impeachment, but after that, you are now too smart on what you agreed before the president.”
