In recognition of World Humanitarian Day, the D-8 Health and Social Protection Programme (D-8 HSP) has reaffirmed its commitment to work with Nigerian government, and other partners to implement strategies that address poverty, hunger, and health challenges in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), .
The organization made this known in a statement to commemorate World Humanitarian Day on 19 August in Abuja.
D-8 HSP extends its support to the Nigerian government, encouraging ongoing efforts to improve the health and livelihoods of Nigerians and address the pressing humanitarian challenges in the country.
The body said the theme for this year’s observance, “Act for Humanity,” underscores the importance of collaborative and sustained actions to uplift millions of Nigerians.
The statement reads: “The D-8 HSP commends the Nigerian government for its proactive initiatives aimed at reducing poverty, including the Student Loan Initiative, Nigeria Consumer Credit Corporations Scheme, the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to make transportation more affordable, and the suspension of tariffs on selected food items, farming inputs, and equipment.
“The government’s short-term plan to distribute rice to vulnerable populations is also a commendable step toward alleviating immediate hunger.
“The D-8 HSP also recognizes the government’s Sector Wide Approach (SWAP) for health, which is poised to significantly improve health outcomes and overall livelihoods. This holistic strategy is expected to streamline resources, enhance coordination among stakeholders, and ensure that health services are more accessible and effective for all Nigerians.”
“As an organization dedicated to enhancing health and social protection across member states, the D-8 HSP is committed to working closely with the Nigerian government and other partners to implement strategies that address poverty, hunger, and health challenges in alignment with the SDGs. We reaffirm our support for the government’s efforts and encourage the timely implementation of policies that will ensure the well-being and prosperity of every Nigerian.”
The Global Director of D-8 HSP, Dr. Ado J. G. Muhammad, expressed optimism about the Nigerian government’s commitment to key initiatives in achieveing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),

“We believe that continued focus on improving health and livelihoods will accelerate Nigeria’s progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being). These efforts will contribute to a more resilient and equitable society.”
