The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has confirmed through the Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES) that anti-snake venom is available in all FCTA-owned hospitals.
The Mandate Secretary of HSES, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe made the disclosure in a press release.
She added that the FCTA will ensure timely treatment for snakebite victims.
The administration also expressed its condolences to the family of Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwangene, who died due to complications from a snakebite.
She described the incident as preventable and emphasized that snakebites remain a serious public health concern, particularly in farm settlements and areas near bushes.
“We want all snakebites to be treated as potentially venomous until assessed by a medical professional.
” Residents are advised to protect themselves by clearing bushes around homes and farms, wearing protective clothing while farming, using lights at night, and avoiding direct contact with snakes”, she said.
Dr Fasawe also added that in the event of a bite, victims should remain calm, immobilize the affected limb, and seek medical attention immediately.
” Harmful practices such as cutting the wound, tying the limb tightly, or applying herbal remedies should be strictly avoided.”
She also warned against taking anti-snake venom without medical supervision, noting that improper use can cause severe reactions and must only be administered by trained health professionals in hospitals.
” To improve emergency response, 12 fully equipped care ambulances have been deployed across Abuja to facilitate patient evacuation. All healthcare facilities are required to follow approved clinical protocols, with sanctions for negligence.”
