Former President Goodluck Jonathan has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s suspension of elected officials in Rivers State, warning that such actions by key figures in the executive and legislative branches could harm Nigeria’s international reputation.
His remarks come In response to President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all state lawmakers for six months.
Jonathan stated this while serving as Chairman at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday,
“These actions by key actors in the executive and legislative arms of government paint the country in a negative light,” he said
In a televised address on Tuesday, 18 March 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State amid a deepening political crisis and rising security concerns. Citing the persistent impasse that has deprived the citizens of Rivers State of democratic dividends, the President said the state had reached a point where normal governance could no longer function.
