Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has awarded a N10 million cash prize to Isioma Sybil Nwosu, the best graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session, in recognition of her exceptional academic achievement.
The announcement was made on Thursday during the university’s 28th Convocation Ceremony, held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium on LASU’s main campus in Ojo, Lagos. The event celebrated academic excellence and also honored distinguished personalities with honorary degrees.
Isioma Sybil Nwosu, a Biochemistry graduate from the Faculty of Science, emerged as the top-performing student with a stellar Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93. Her academic feat earned widespread applause during the ceremony, where Governor Sanwo-Olu personally presented the award as a mark of the state’s commitment to rewarding excellence.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said “This award is not just about recognizing individual brilliance; it is a celebration of what is possible when hard work, discipline, and dedication come together,”
“Isioma has made Lagos proud, and we are confident she will go on to do even greater things.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu also used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s continued support for education in Lagos State, pledging further investments in infrastructure, research, and student welfare at LASU and other institutions across the state.
The convocation also featured the conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees and Distinguished Professorships on eminent Nigerians who have made outstanding contributions to society. Among the honorees were the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), and former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Otunba Olufemi Pedro.
LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello stated “These individuals have served Nigeria with distinction, and their recognition today underscores LASU’s role in not only nurturing future leaders but also honoring those who have paved the way”.
The ceremony was attended by top government officials, members of the academic community, and families of graduating students.
