In commemoration of this year’s International Children’s Day, Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, has called for an end to child labour, street hawking, begging, and other practices that threaten the well-being and future of young Nigerians.
Addressing the public through a statement released by his Press Secretary, Jibrin Gwamna, Jatau emphasized the urgent need for all stakeholders governments, parents, communities, and civil society to unite against the growing menace of out-of-school children and child exploitation.
“Children are special gifts from God,” Jatau said. “There is a need for parents, guardians and the authorities concerned to ensure that the Nigerian child is given all the necessary support through love, education and moral training to build an egalitarian society for the betterment of all.”
Jatau lamented the alarming rise in the number of children roaming the streets without access to education or care, describing the trend as a threat to the nation’s future. He stressed that it is not only a governmental obligation but also a societal duty to ensure that every child receives quality education and moral guidance.
Reaffirming the commitment of the 7th Assembly to child-centered legislation, the speaker pledged continuous support for laws and resolutions that safeguard children’s welfare and educational development.
Congratulating children across Nasarawa’s 13 local government areas on the occasion, Jatau encouraged parents and guardians to reflect on the significance of the day.
He concluded with a call for collective action: “If parents, guardians, and stakeholders, as well as individuals and groups, join hands with the government in tackling child abuse, child labour and other forms of violence against children in the society, it would go a long way in promoting peace, unity and societal development.”
