Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu has assumed office as the 23rd Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with a firm commitment to enhancing the welfare and career prospects of corps members.
His vision includes tackling administrative bottlenecks, improving living conditions, and expanding employment opportunities for participants after their service year.
During the official handover ceremony in Abuja, where he took over from Brigadier General Yushau Dogara Ahmed, Nafiu emphasized the critical role corps members play in national development.
He acknowledged their contributions as essential workers in education, healthcare, and legal services, particularly in underserved rural areas.
Recognizing the challenges corps members face, he pledged to improve feeding, hygiene, and overall service conditions. He also outlined plans to strengthen job-placement initiatives, ensuring that corps members have better access to employment in the private sector.
To encourage organizations to retain corps members beyond their service year, the new NYSC chief proposed employer incentives, aiming to bridge the gap between the one-year service and long-term career stability.
Nafiu also commended his predecessors for sustaining the scheme through various challenges and called on NYSC staff to uphold professionalism and dedication in supporting corps members. He reaffirmed his commitment to repositioning the scheme to meet modern demands and prepare for future challenges.
