Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the ongoing demolition of citizens’ properties across the country, describing the actions as unjust, insensitive, and economically damaging.
In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi expressed concern that demolitions carried out without proper notice send a “chilling message” to entrepreneurs nationwide — that their hard work and sacrifices can be erased overnight.
“This is happening across the country at a time when the government is supposed to be lifting citizens out of poverty. Instead, it is plunging them deeper into hardship,” he stated.
The former Anambra State governor lamented that the destruction of citizens’ structures and goods, often worth billions of naira, undermines businesses and worsens economic insecurity for hardworking Nigerians.
“An administration whose policies and style have sent several million Nigerians into poverty in 29 months should show compassion for its citizens,” Obi said.
He questioned the legal and moral justification for demolishing private properties that are not used for criminal purposes, especially without prior notice or adherence to due process.
“What legal authority justifies the destruction of private property without prior notice or due process? Are these actions genuinely in the public interest, or are they arbitrary and disproportionate exercises of power?” he queried.
Obi urged the government to ensure that urban development and enforcement activities are guided by the rule of law, respect for citizens’ rights, and protection of livelihoods.
“These demolitions send a chilling message to entrepreneurs across the nation and beyond—that their hard work and sacrifices can be wiped away overnight. If we fail to stand against such injustices, we risk undermining the very foundations of economic growth and social stability,” he warned.
